From searching Irish records, the GOULDINGs have been in Glountanebeg, Cullen, County Cork, for a very long time. This branch is descendant from Michael Goulding and Mary Nolan.

The following is as a short history of Michael and Mary and their children.

Michael Goulding and Mary Nolan, is the first union, that I know of, between a GOULDING and a NOLAN. Michael Goulding, of Glountanebeg, Cullen, Millstreet, Co. Cork, Ireland, married Mary Nolan, of Knockduff, Cullen, Millstreet, Co. Cork, Ireland about 1852.

Cornelius Goulding stayed in Ireland and married Jane Tarrant of Ahane, Cullen, on February 6, 1883. She was the daughter of Nickolas and Catherine Murphy Tarrant. Jane died November 16, 1916. Cornelius ran a pub in Glountanebeg. The pub was later run by his daughter, Mary, and her husband, Michael Linhan.

Daniel Golden is completely unknown except for his birth. Do to lack of his descendants on Mary Golding's will, he either remained a bachelor or died young.

Mary Goulden came to America in 1883. For over forty years, she worked for Ogden Mills as a servant on Fifth Avenue. At one time she worked with a Kate Nolan. Any relationship is unknown. Mr. Mills, upon his death, left the Fifth Avenue apartment and a large sum of money to her. I have not located his will. Mary lived a long life. She died of colon cancer in 1938 at the age of 78. She left a will, but the will was changed the night before she died. Causing it to be contested. This help me greatly in establishing who were her relatives at the time of her death. Mary Goulding is bury in Calvary (section 48, plot 1, grave 11). The two Foley sisters, who benefited the most from the changed will, are bury with her, but only Mary’s name is on the grave stone.

Margaret Goulding Hannigan Miller came to America in 1885. She married Edward Hannigan, year unknown. Don't know if the marriage took place in America or Ireland.

On July 26, 1902, Edward Hannigan died of a heart attack when he was 37. Margaret didn't remarry until after 1920 to a Miller, first name unknown. All the Hannigan children were contestors in the Mary Goulding will. Edward Hannigan maybe related to Hannah Hannigan, wife of Timothy Golden. Margaret Goulding Hannigan Miller is bury in Calvary along with her first husband, her daughter Mary Nolan, and two grandchildren, Vincent & Florence Nolan, plus an infant, Margaret Woods (section 36, range 2 plot C, grave 16). Relationship of Margaret Woods to the Hannigan family is unknown.

Kate Goulding Foley came to America in 1886 and married Patrick Foley in 1891.

According to my mother, Mary Foley married for money. Mr. Jones owned the Second Avenue El. He died within a few years of the marriage. Margaret never married. These two are the renown Foley sisters. Catherine had a son, Robert by a McCartney. Have not been able to find a marriage certificate. Hoping the 1930 census will fill in some additional family information on Catherine. Patrick & Kate Foley share their grave in Calvary (section 18, range 9, plot F, grave 10) with a John Sullivan, born in New York, about 1875 and died on June 6, 1902 . The connection to the Foley family is not known at present. There are two Sullivan connection to this family. They are Ellen Sullivan, wife of Denis Goolden, and Patrick Foley's mother who was a Sullivan.

Denis Goulding stayed in Ireland and married Ellen Sullivan of Annagloor, Drishane, on February 19, 1898 in Millstreet, Cullen, Co. Cork. She was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Callaghan Sullivan.

Denis was alive when Mary wrote her 1st will (1936), but the inheritance went to his daughter, Catherine, who was living in Bierley, Bradford, Yorkshire, England in 1938. His sons Michael, Andrew and Timothy are also in Mary's will, only Timothy was living in New York City. Both Michael and Andrew are listed in the will as living in Glountane, Ireland. My mother remembers a Timothy as being a blacksmith. There is a Timothy Goulding in the 1933/34 NYC Directory as a blacksmith. I believe this Timothy could be Denis son. Cornelius is not in the will. He properly was already death. There is currently a Denis Goulding living in Glountane on a farm that been in the Goulding family for generations. At present, I don't if he is descendent from this line.

Timothy Goolden is Denis twin. Everything about him was completely unknown for the longest while. He married Hannah Hannigan. He was a blacksmith.

If it wasn't for another Goulding-Nolan connection, I don't how long it would have taken me to figure out which children were his in the Mary Golding will. But with Sr. Stephanie (Leonora) Nolan information on her mother, her uncle and her aunt, I was able to connect them as two nieces and a nephew in Mary Golding's will. I understood then, that Sr. Stephanie grandfather, was my missing Denis Goulding. He came to America, year unknown. He married Hannah Hannigan. (Any relationship to Edward Hannigan is unknown at present.) Hannah died within a few years of Mary birth on December 7th, 1895 and is buried in Calvary (section 14, range 5, plot L, grave 5). Hannah's death certificate maiden name conflicts with the maiden name on her children's birth certificates. Timothy remarried. This woman is unknown, but maybe a Sheehan. Timothy also died fairly young on September 26th, 1903. He is bury with his wife and with two of their children, Dennis and Michael. Also in the same grave are two Hannigan children, Julia and Nora. The Hannigan children were previous unknown because none of Hannigan children birth certificate mention any children that died. There is also a Ella Sheehan in the grave. She was the first one bury in 1888 at the age of 19. The grave was purchase by Timothy Golding. The connection between him and Ella is unknown. Also Hannah Sheehan is the Godmother to Mary Golden. Her relationship to Ella is unknown. The most important person for me, in that grave, was Michael Murphy.

Hanna Goulding Murphy married John Murphy of Knocknashinnagh, Cullen, on April 8, 1883, in Millstreet, Cullen, Co. Cork. He is the son of Michael and Nora Leary Murphy. This was all I knew, until I found their son, Michael, buried with the Golden family. I immediately search for other children in the NYC archives and quickly found two more. With three children, I was able to find the family on the 1900 federal census for New York. The census provided me with three more children. Their first names match the names of the last four nieces in Mary Golding's will.

Apparently they came to America around 1887. He listed his occupation as carpenter. Their first known child was born in Ireland. All other known children were born in New York City. The mystery for the longest time was John Joseph Murphy because he was not in Mary Golding's will. I finally found his death certificate and found out he died from falling out a window. They had a Timothy Herlihy living with them as a boarder on the 1900 census. Don't know if this my missing Timothy from my Herlihy line.

John Goolden is completely unknown except for his birth. Do to lack of descendants on Mary Golding will, he either remained a bachelor or died young.

Honora Goulden Morley came to America in 1897. She married a widower, Daniel Morley, around 1901. Daniel is listed as one of three boarders living in the Michael Herlihy home on East 96^th Street. To my knowledge, they only had one child, a daughter name Hannah. She was always known as Anna. Nora, as the only surviving sibling, contested Mary's will. She got nothing. The Foley sisters insisted that she was nothing more then another cousin. She died on 15 Dec 1958 in the Bronx, two years after her daughter's death, who never married.

Julia Goulding Herlihy married Michael Herlihy. Michael arrived in New York aboard the SS Arizona on April 19, 1886. Julia arrived in 1888.

I believe they married in New York City. Have not found a civil marriage certificate, but the New York Archdiocese at the time didn't have to notify the authorities of marriages if their banns were publicly announced. The New York archdiocese also has not organize their archive records. Making finding the right church an expensive hit or miss proposition. Without knowing which church and when, I may never find their marriage certificate. Michael was a street sweeper. In 1916, Michael brought, his niece, (my grandmother) to New York, because his wife, Julia, recently died (from an abortion) and his son, William, was handicap and needed extra care. His son, Thomas Leo is my grandfather. He could not marry Mary because they were double first cousins. He married Anna Stanek. Do to the first cousin situation, he never acknowledged my mother. In 1938, (Michael) Francis, Thomas, Cornelius and Irene (Kandl) appear in Mary Goulding's will. That was the last time, my mother heard about her father and this branch of the Herlihys. Michael and his wife, Julia, are bury in Calvary (section 31, range 8, plot H, grave 6) along with three of their children, Timothy, Julia and Anna, that died young. They are one of the few relatives to have a gravestone . Their grandson, Patrick (my mother twin brother), and some of their other children, Kate, Mary and William are bury in another Calvary grave (section 14, range 32, plot H, grave 10) with Michael sister, Catherine, and her husband, Michael Murphy (this Murphy is on the Herlihy side), and two of their children, Thomas L. and Arthur T. Murphy .

Ellie Goulding Herlihy married Patrick Herlihy on February 6th, 1897 in Glountanebeg Townland, Cullen Civil Parish, Millstreet Union, Co. Cork.

He listed his occupation as carpenter on the birth registrar of his children. Their first child, Catherine was baptizes February 10th, 1897 in Glountanebeg, Cullen, Co. Cork, four days after Patrick and Ellie marriage. My grandmother, Mary, was the second born on May 6th, 1898 in the Boherboy district, Williamstown, Nohavaldaly, Co. Cork. I then have Michael born on September 11th, 1900, John on June 24th, 1902. Thomas Patrick, is born on October 26th, 1905, but I can't find him in the birth index. These are the only children of Patrick and Ellie that I know of. I do not know what happen to Catherine, but she must have died before 1936 because she is not in the will. On November 5, 1916, my grandmother, Mary came to New York aboard the SS. St. Louis. The SS. Muen Chen manifest, has Michael arriving in New York on April 7, 1929 and staying with an Aunt O'Connors in New Haven, Connecticut. My mother remembers seeing him when she was young. He was mad at someone. Months later, police informed them that he was murder. I do not know where or when this took place. I have not found his death certificate in the New York five boros. He could have been kill anywhere in the metropolitan area. John, according to my mother, was kill in the Rebellion.

The result of finding so many certificates is that I have establish that the Hannigans, the Herlihys and the Murphys all lived in the Yorkville section of Manhattan. In fact, they lived within a few city blocks of each other for many years. Only Timothy Goulding lived below 42nd street.

In my search of my Goulding line I came across few other Gouldings facts. The following are marriages. Some of them involve family names that turn out to be interesting. Here is what I came across. Some of them should must be related to Michael.

Catherine Goulding (b. Bef. 1864, d. Unknown) of Glountane, Cullen, daughter of Cornelius and Catherine (Horgan), married Michael Sullivan of Gloutanbeg, Cullen, son of Michael and Ellen (Hickey) on 29th of November, 1884.
Eugene Goulding (b. Bef. 1871, d. Unknown) of Glountanbeg, Cullen, son of John James and Mary (Murley), married Mary Sullivan of Gloutanbeg, Cullen, daughter of Michael and Ellen (Hickey) on 3rd of March, 1889.
Daniel Murley (b. Bef. 1837, d. Unknown) married Mary Goulding (b. Bef 1839, d. Unknown). Their daughter Ellen Murley of Glountane, Cullen, married William Fitzgerald of Eaglowne.
Jeremiah Goulding (b. Abt. 1839, d. 22 Mar 1890) of Glountane, Cullen, son of Jeremiah, married Hannah Kelleher of Meenskeha, Cullen, daughter of Daniel Kelleher, on 13th of March, 1867 in Derrinagree.
Patrick Goulding (b. Abt. 1850, d. Unknown) of Glountanbeg, Cullen, son of Jeremiah, married Johanna Crowley of Knocknaboul, Ballincuslane, daughter of Timothy Crawford.
